Do you need to waterproof concrete?

Concrete is a strong and durable material. It’s designed to withstand intense pressure, but it’s not exactly maintenance-free. Many concrete structures need to be sealed and waterproofed for maximum durability. Read on to learn why concrete waterproofing is important.

Benefits of concrete waterproofing

Concrete waterproofing is designed to keep water infiltration to a minimum. When water gets into concrete, it can erode the materials within and rust the supportive rebar. Over time, this leads to cracking, staining, and structural issues.

Waterproofing seals off the concrete to reduce these risks. This may include a general seal over the entire slab or targeted waterproofing for joints, exposed areas, foundations, etc. All concrete waterproofing works toward the same goal, but application techniques will vary.

Different ways to waterproof concrete

The most significant distinction between concrete waterproofing techniques is below-grade vs. above-grade waterproofing. Below-grade refers to the area of the concrete below ground, such as a basement or foundation. Above-grade applies to concrete above the surface that may be exposed to rain, wind, UV rays, and other environmental elements.

Below-grade concrete waterproofing seals the concrete from hydrostatic pressure and groundwater. Above-grade concrete waterproofing protects against precipitation or water coming in from passing vehicles, leaking pipes, and other sources.

Does all concrete need to be waterproofed?

While there are many benefits to waterproofing concrete, it is not necessary for all structures. A standard concrete sidewalk may not need to be waterproofed, but an outdoor parking garage should be. Most commercial concrete structures should be sealed in some fashion, depending on where they’re located and what function they serve.
