Unveiling the essence of tuckpointing
Mortar joints can deteriorate over time, hindering the aesthetics of your commercial brick building or leading to structural issues. We’ll discuss the importance of tuckpointing for brick wall restoration.
What is tuckpointing?
Tuckpointing is a technique for repairing or finishing the mortar joints between bricks or stones with a thin ridge of fine lime mortar or putty.
Repointing is the term used for removing and replacing old mortar. However, the mortar used in tuckpointing is the same color as or similar to the original.
Identifying the need for tuckpointing
Some signs of mortar deterioration are found with a simple visual inspection. Look along areas exposed to weather, near drain spots, or along the ground. Look at large areas to see if the mortar has inconsistent depth or shaping.
Common causes of mortar damage are cracks, weathering mortar joints, water intrusion, or ineffective joint sealants.
Benefits of tuckpointing
Tuckpointing can improve aesthetic appeal by giving your masonry a facelift. It also enhances structural integrity by preventing water damage and deterioration.
Tuckpointing process
- Remove old grout with a hammer and chisel, raker bar, or 4″ angle grinder with a diamond masonry blade.
- Clean the joints with a masonry brush, hose, or leaf blower.
- Mix the mortar.
- Use a tuckpointing trowel or joiner to push the mortar into the wall, supported by a hawk board.
- Allow it to dry enough where it’s just a little moist, then brush excess mortar away.
- After 2-3 weeks, use a masonry cleaner.
- A sealer can be applied after 30 days.
DIY vs. Professional tuckpointing
DIY tuckpointing may seem like a better option because it’s cheaper. However, complicating factors exist, such as possible scaffolding required for taller houses, the right tools needed to match the shape of the mortar joints, and getting the right type and color of mortar for the best match.
By hiring a professional to do your tuckpointing, you ensure that your mortar gets the best match and is applied perfectly.
